چکیده

Modeling and detailed simulation of neoclassical transport phenomena both in 2D and 3D toroidal configurations are shown. The emphasis is put on the effect of finiteness of the drift-orbit width, which brings a non-local nature to neoclassical transport phenomena. Evolution of the self-consistent radial electric field in the framework of neoclassical transport is also investigated. The combination of Monte-Carlo calculation for ion transport and numerical solver of ripple-averaged kinetic equation for electrons makes it possible to calculate neoclassical fluxes and the time evolution of the radial electric field in the whole plasma region, including the finite-orbit-width(FOW) effects and global evolution of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM). The simulation results show that the heat conductivity around the magnetic axis is smaller than that obtained from standard neoclassical theory and that the evolution of GAM oscillation on each flux surface is coupled with other surfaces if the FOW effect is significant. A global simulation of radial electric field evolution in a non-axisymmetric plasma is also shown.

Non-Local Simulation of the Formation of Neoclassical Ambipolar Electric Field in Non-Axisymmetric Configurations

Neoclassical transport simulation code (FORTEC-3D) applicable to non-axisymmetric configurations is developed. A new hybrid simulation model in which ion transport is solved by using the δ f Monte-Carlo method including the finite-orbit-width effects, while electron transport is solved by a reduced ripple-averaged kinetic equation, is adopted. This model makes it possible to simulate the dynami...

Neoclassical radial electric field and transport with finite orbits.

Neoclassical transport in a toroidal plasma with finite ion orbits is studied, including for the first time the self-consistent radial electric field. Using a low-noise deltaf particle simulation, we demonstrate that a deep electric-field well develops in a region with a steep density gradient, because of the self-collision-driven ion flux. We find that the electric field agrees with the standa...

Kinetic Effects in the Pedestal of a Tokamak

We consider the effects of finite ExB on the residual and neoclassical ion heat transport and ion flow in the pedestal. For a tokamak pedestal with a density scale of the poloidal ion gyroradius the finite ExB drift modfies the ion orbits, moving the trapped-passing boundary towards the tail of the ion distribution function. Introduction In many tokamak plasmas the width of the pedestal is obse...

Numerical Simulation of Neoclassical Currents, Parallel Viscosity, and Radial Current Balance in Tokamak Plasmas

One of the principal problems en route to a fusion reactor is that of insufficient plasma confinement, which has lead to both theoretical and experimental research into transport processes in the parameter range relevant for fusion energy production. The neoclassical theory of tokamak transport is well-established unlike the theory of turbulence driven anomalous transport in which extensive pro...

Neoclassical Plateau Regime Transport in a Tokamak Pedestal

In subsonic tokamak pedestals the radial scale of plasma profiles can be comparable to the ion poloidal Larmor radius, thereby making the radial electrostatic field so strong that the E × B drift has to be retained in the ion kinetic equation in the same order as the parallel streaming. The modifications of neoclassical plateau regime transport – such as the ion heat flux, and the poloidal ion ...
